2022/01/28: New, Improved and Fixed

New:
  • French translation added for MakeBraille server page. User manual in French will follow later.
  • User manual in Spanish will be created soon.
Improved:
  • Multiple files are returned when rendered as "Multiple Outputs". The file names each now contain an abbreviation in square brackets to distinguish them. If multiple files have been zip or converted, or if a source contains multiple pieces, sets, etc., these individual parts are grouped accordingly. So, for example, all horn parts are returned in one horn file, all trombone parts in one trombone file, etc.
  • "Multiple outputs" now better supports capx sources.
  • Error workflow and reporting to developers and users.
  • Handling of clefs and keys to allow country specific prefixes, clefs and keys. Clefs are now displayed (or not) according to country preferences and follow the reading order of the country (except for orchestral scores, which are always displayed from top to bottom). Instances of percussion or scores starting with the dot 6,3 are displayed with clefs instead of these prefixes. Only Spain wants clefs to be displayed for all scores. The handling of the key follows the German rules, which say that the key is only displayed at the beginning and only again when it changes. In general, there are now simple ways to fine-granularly control the display of keys and clefs by country and context. So if there are any errors here, they are easily fixed after feedback.
Fixed:
  • Logout error.
  • Handling of multiple MusicXML files.

2022/01/17: New, Improved and fixed

New:
  • Updated Capella optimizer: Rhythmic errors in Capella files are now even easier to find, as a system number is displayed in pink at the beginning of the system (in addition to the red marking of the error itself). Download the new optimizer at: https://dzblesen.uber.space/projects/hodder/wiki/Capella_Optimizers
  • Special case for vocals with instrumental accompaniment: If "Bar over Bar" and "Mixed Output Presentation" are selected, a full score will be output as "Bar over Bar", the instrumental accompaniment as "Bar over Bar", but the vocal part as "Section by Section" without section markers. The sections are based on the song text (complete sentences). The behaviour currently works for UK only. If other countries would also like this behaviour, please let us know.
Improved:
  • MusicXML import.
  • Mixed output has been enhanced to allow more types of scores, e.g. for multiple vocal parts with orchestral parts you get all individual voice files, a vocal score file and a full score file. If you have a collection of scores in a zip file, or different sets in a score, you will get separate files for each vocal voice/instrument as a collection of scores/sets, in addition to the full scores (i.e., a soprano file with all scores/sets; an alto file with all scores/sets; and a file with the full scores).
Fixed:
  • SMuL characters.
  • Bug in the handling of user profiles.

New:
  • Updated capella optimizers (see below): download now from: https://dzblesen.uber.space/projects/hodder/wiki/Capella_Optimizers
  • 'Show page breaks' checkbox on Config page under Output Presentation: When deselected, the ink print page breaks and numbers are removed. Note: when 'Mixed presentation output' is selected, the ink print page breaks and numbers are removed only for separated (single) part files.
  • Part Selector now also works for capx files (in addition to MusicXML files).
  • Section by Section options now allow you to set the size of sections as musically as possible - as standard (typically 6-8 measures per section of instrumental parts) - or as short sections (typically 3-4 measures per section of instrumental parts) which may suit learners who need shorter sections while learning and memorizing music.
Improved:
  • Position of bar numbers: for vocal score with piano accompaniment for Spain and Germany, bar numbers are presented above the notes, but to the left for other countries.
  • Recognition of combined instrument names when written with ampersand sign, vertical bar or slash. For orchestral scores they are no longer separated into two systems.
  • MusicXML voice recognition.
  • A summary of instrument names is now presented at the top of the score if they can be uniquely determined by prefixes or clefs (in Bar over Bar).
  • Internal conversion routines updated to improve conversion speed and reduce crashes.
  • BRF and PEF output now possible for Section by Section, and System by System, and for capella files (they already worked for Bar over Bar and MusicXML files).
  • PEF creation from zip files.
  • capella optimizer support for: publisher ties; and identification of rhythmic mistakes in capella files, advising user of potential rhythmical errors they should fix before conversion.
  • The "Create Braille" button shows the selected output format (both on the main page and on the "Select Parts" page), e.g. the button is now displayed as "Create Braille - BRF".
  • Improved detection of user's browser language settings to set the default language.
Fixed:
  • Bar over Bar line breaks when a single bar runs over were flush left, and are now correctly indented.
  • Missing invisible rests to indicate beginning and ending of wedges which do not fall on a note.
  • Indentations and empty lines in Bar over Bar output.
  • Missing abbreviated instrument names in orchestral scores.
  • Repeated titles or composer names in System by System output.
  • Missing measures/notes where two full-measure rests are separated by a Bar over Break line break.
  • Errors in Senza Misura output, and simile creation within these measures.
  • Generation of section (Section by Section) in some cases which were creating over-long sections.
  • Crashes of Part selector for scores with titles containing special characters.

New:
  • "Mixed" Output - a new configuration option under "Score Settings/Output Display" means that you can now choose a "mixed" output: This will output separate files for each part plus an accompaniment part/full score. E.g. one file for the vocal part plus one file for the piano accompaniment; or 5 separate files for quintet instruments plus a combined score file; or separate vocal parts plus a choir score. This works for both MusicXML and capx files.
  • Spanish user interface - this has been automatically translated and is ready for testing by Spanish users.
Improved:
  • For all English speaking countries, for a vocal part with lyrics: the lyrics are displayed first, followed by the musical notes. The indentation is 00 for the lyrics and 22 for the musical notes. You will now get a system break at the end of a sentence (with a period) in the lyrics. System breaks in the ink print are then represented with bar numbers.
  • Hints boxes for user profile selection and voice selection.
Fixed:
  • Parentheses at note heads were not written in some cases.
  • Instrument names and abbreviations in orchestral scores.
  • Breve rests.
  • Unnecessary blank lines between systems in System by System layout.

New:
  • Part Selector (from MusicXML files only currently):
You can now convert individual parts from MusicXML files. Once a score is selected on the Main Page you can use the 'Select Parts' button to decide whether to omit parts by deselecting them. You can now use individual customer/transcriber profiles with different configuration settings using the 'Profiles' feature on the Main Page. MakeBraille has a default country-specific default setting which cannot be overwritten. Now you can set up different configuration settings and save them as individual profiles. On the Main Page you can switch between saved profiles, or delete a profile, and on the Configuration Page you can switch, delete, create and save profiles, as well as restoring to your country-specific default profile. Note: Profiles do not save settings which have no impact on the output (e.g. the Main Page settings).

Improved:
  • Handling of usernames (for logging in) tolerates inconsistencies in dots, spaces, upper and lower case.
  • Create general pause for single instruments like piano at measure over measure (happens when converting voice separations).

2020/10/16: Fixes, Improvements and Changes

Fixed:
  • Server downtime this week to fix a critical problem where the server got stuck repeatedly trying to convert files which failed:
e.g where some Configuration options were not compatible; some accented symbols in filenames; .MXL files which didn't actually contain MusicXML; and fix some bugs. The server now removes 'stuck' files from the queue, and the user and developer are both notified of the problem; and files will now be checked prior to conversion and users prevented from uploading incompatible or corrupt files for conversion which would block the server.
Improved:
  • Added some cases of staccato signs recognized from capella scan.
  • Improved the way in which the server works with capella files to meet the needs of new capella users.
  • When trying to convert capella files, users now advised to first run capella Optimizers now supplied by dzb lesen available on the Support Area (updated on 19.10.2020): https://dzblesen.uber.space/projects/hodder/wiki/Capella_Optimizers
Changed:
  • The Configuration file needed by the developer to check problem file conversions are now available to the developer directly, so will not be sent to the user. However, ways of confirming the Configuration settings of a converted file for the user are being considered.

2020/07/26: Major update

With an improved look and feel, and lots of conversion improvements it is now even easier to choose your settings and get great conversions into music Braille, including from MusicXML files, and as Bar-Over-Bar formatting. These improvements have been made possible through funding and support from the DAISY Music Braille Project. Here’s what’s new…

  1. Look and feel: the design and colours of MakeBraille have been updated in line with dzb lesen’s design. It is still fully accessible.
  2. Conversion fixes and improvements: conversions are even more reliable and accurate, including: better handling of instrument names and their abbreviations, improved import of figured bass etc.
  3. File Format Handling: you can now upload, order and convert multiple files in a single zip file, including files in different formats.
  4. Conversions: you can now convert MusicXML files, as well as scanned CapX (capella) files.
  5. Configuration options: new groupings of options on the Configuration page make it easier to set your preferences. Some you’ll only need to set once, others you may wish to set for different scores you convert. You can also have your most common settings displayed on the main MakeBraille page for easy access, and choose where the Configuration button is displayed.
  6. Configuration tooltips: expanding tooltips have been added to explain some headings and options on the Configuration page.
  7. Formatting: Bar-Over-Bar formatting is now supported for the first time, used in many other countries, though not usually used in Germany. This will be further improved with feedback from users.
  8. Country settings: country codes and standards are now listed by country rather than initials, and additional country codes are now supported: Finland, Spain, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, Canada, Brazil.
  9. Help with foreign languages: an optional pronunciation guide to foreign characters has been implemented, for singers who need help with other languages. Currently available to help with German pronunciation.
  10. Help with symbols: the optional key list which explains unfamiliar symbols appearing in the score has been improved. You can choose how much detail this contains.
  11. Error-handling: automated error reports are now sent to dzb lesen if a file cannot be converted, and you will also be notified of a problem.
  12. Support materials: user guides and tutorials are now available on a secure Wiki in English to suit our new international users.
  13. Feedback: you can submit Feedback to us from the login page, e.g. if you find errors or have trouble with a file, do let us know so we can fix things.
  14. Trial: from September-December we will be running a trial with a small number of additional blindness agencies from other countries to use MakeBraille to convert scores for their blind musicians. It is already used in Germany at dzb lesen, in Switzerland by SBS, and in the Netherlands by Dedicon.
  15. Removed: the option to output as an ‘audit file’ has been removed.
  16. Acknowledgements: dzb lesen gratefully acknowledges the DAISY Consortium, funders and project team for supporting our development work during 2020 and 2021, through the DAISY Music Braille Project.
