Capella Optimizers

dzblesen has created some Optimizers for capella for specific features or music types which can significantly improve music Braille conversions by indicating scanning errors so you can fix them before conversion. You install them into your version of capella and call them from the plugin menu as described here:

  1. Download the zip file of capella Optimizers (updated 01.02.2024): user-scripts240201.zip
  2. Save the unzipped files in: Documents > capella > user-script.
  3. Re-start capella.
  4. You should now be able to see the Optimizers available from the menu bar: PlugIns Ctrl-F3/ Plugin... / Own. The last selected script can be called again with Ctrl+R.

General: Texts can be marked up with the following shortcuts:

c:... {CREATOR:...}
d:... {DIRECTION:...}
l:... {LCAPTION:...}
p:... {P:...}
s:... {SOURCE:...}
st:.. {SUB-TITLE:...}
t:.. {TITLE:...}

Example:

c:Gustav Mahler {CREATOR:Gustav Mahler}

Note

The optimisers work optimally together with the Working Mode (found in the View menu). In the working mode, rhythm errors in particular are also highlighted in colour.
The MakeBraille capella script allows you to run the MakeBraille server from capella.

CapScan Optimizer

Description

Lyrics are colored blue to make them more easily distinguishable from other text.

Fingerings are colored blue, normalized and centered.

Chord symbols are colored green to distinguish them from other texts. In a few cases chord symbols are not recognized by CapScan Optimizer.

Slurs are colored green to distinguish them better from ties. Those in dark green have been interpreted as incoming from the previous system or as outgoing to the next system.

Words like ''solo'' and ''tutti'' are highlighted. You must decide manually in which systems they should be written.

Colours

1. Dark red 2. Pink
  • Note with syllable ending in "k" (kk vs. ck)
  • Note with syllable, where the same syllable occurs in the piece but with a space (dora vs. do ra)
  • Note is a lookup (influence on line break)
  • On this note, there are conspicuous syllables or syllables with conspicuous syllable bindings (the syllables may be wrong, but need not be; in case of doubt, all other colours have priority)
  • Suggestion or follow-up (note without time value) with a length atypical for the piece (16th, 32nd, etc.)
  • An explicit barline which is not printed in Braille but might indicate rhythmical problems
  • Pedal up asterisk is positioned clearly to the left of note (possible error)
  • Hairpin (wedges) in vocals differs significantly, consider adding invisible rests to second voice
  • Text/symbols are in the second voice
  • Song text syllables are found several times (because of repetitions or chorale etc.), but marked syllables are found only once
  • Arpeggio is only in one voice (note) or at a rest (error)
3. Red
  • Note in the vocal part has an articulation
  • Note with syllable ending with a hyphen
  • Note with a tied-over syllable starting with an uppercase letter.
  • Note may have wrong lyrics
  • Note with dotting and subsequent invisible rest
  • Suggestion or follow-up (note without time value) with articulation
  • Pause with accent (sf etc.)
  • A visible pause among invisible rests which might indicate rhythmical problems
  • Invisible tuplet rest between tuplet notes
  • Pause where a slur begins or ends
  • Invisible rest is untypical for the current rhythm in terms of length.
  • Bow may have been recognized as two bows
  • Bow is under a system with lyrics
  • Text or symbols lie under a system with song text
  • Text is a typical scan error. Exception: note ranges (and) marked with single brackets
  • It is a special text that may need further editing (e.g., m.d.).
  • Hairpin (wedge) is under a system with lyrics
  • Word insertion Ped. instead of a pedal sign
  • Pedal up asterisks are to the left of a note
4. Blue
  • Notes of the same pitch occur in other voices of the same system (checking for possible wrong accidentals)
5. Brown-Orange
  • Note/pause is in small print
  • Note/pause is a normal size suggestion/reference
  • Text syllable very long, possibly two syllables
6. Green
  • Note has multi-syllable lyrics and next note is empty
  • Note contains lyrics with spaces
  • Lyrics of the note contains wrong dot.

Guitar Optimizer

The Guitar Optimizer prepares notes for plucked instruments:

  1. Fingerings of the left hand are colored blue and slightly offset to the left of the chords
  2. Fingerings of the right hand are colored pink
  3. Location information (Roman numerals) with possible barrées or continuation lines are coloured blue (see plucked instruments)
  4. String details (s1 to s7) are coloured blue
  5. Position and string indications at breaks are colored red
  6. Glissandi are reinforced, coloured blue and aligned with the noteheads

Orchestration Optimizer

Piano reductions sometimes contain instrumentation details such as ''+flauti'' or similar. The Orchestration Optimizer recognizes such information and marks it with {O:...}. The information is colored red when it is at a pause.

String Optimizer

The String Optimizer should be used with complex notes for string instruments. In addition to coloring the fingerings, open strings (blue), and up and down and natural harmonics (green), there are the following:

  • Position information (p1 to p12 with p for position) is colored blue
  • String specifications (Roman numerals) are colored pink
  • Position and string information and rests are coloured red

Other Optimizers

  • De-Color: Remove all color markings.
  • Invisible Rests: All rests are marked as invisible. Currently only works for all rests of the piece, but not for a selection.
  • Phrases: Convert slurs with a minimum length into phrasing slurs (colored as light blue)
  • RedTimes: Color all time signatures red, so that they are not output in Braille
